Fantasy Sports Girl: Fantasy Hockey STUDS AND DUDS 3.24.08

With the playoff push upon us, it’s time make those final fantasy roster changes that could mean the difference between going home with the cup and just sitting at home with a playoff beard. Here are the guys I’d like to pick up and guys I’d like to dump. Detroit’s Johan Franzen has been on fire lately and if he’s still available in your fantasy league, grab him. The Red Wings’ left wing lit the lamp 10 times so far this month, giving him 14 points in March, which is more than he had in previous two months combined. My advice: pick him up and ride him while he’s hot. Another forward who’s been getting it done is Edmonton’s Sam Gagner. This Oiler was rookie of the month in february and has been super-slick in March, racking up 12 points in his last 8 games. With two games this week against the Wild, a team he’s owned lately, that hot streak should continue. Speaking of hot Oilers, Joni Pitkanen has been vital to the Riggers recent run. The young Finn has seven points in his last seven games, great numbers for a defenseman. Even better for a guy who had a total of seven points in the previous 24. For fantasy hockey deadweight to dump, let’s start with Peter Forsberg. The drama of “will he or won’t he play” has been replaced by “can he or can’t he play?” A groin injury has limited him recently, but it’s not like we’re missing much - he’s only come up with two assists since joining the Avs. Time to cut him loose. Perennial fantasy sports girl whipping boy, Rick DiPietro also makes this week’s dump list. The Islanders goalie is out for the year with hip surgery. After giving up 21 goals in his last five games, they might just bring in a vet to put him down.

Injury has also ended the season of promising Kings rookie Jack Johnson. The defenseman will miss the rest of the season with a broken right foot. It’s always sad to see a young guy get injured, but now he’ll have more time for his folk rock career. Be sure to check out more videos on fantasysportsgirl.com!
